The world has become a different place to what it was at the beginning of the year: face masks are the ‘new normal’, shaking hands a no-no and video calling is second nature.
Everyone has had to rethink the way they work in the past few months, and if you need to go back to work, then you might be considering how to get yourself and your employees there safely. One type of transport you may not have considered is carsharing, a more autonomous way of getting around town. There are 3 main types of carsharing available in the UK:
Members of the public can rent their private vehicles to others – similar to the AirBnB model - allowing them to earn money from an asset that stands idle 90% of the time. Businesses can take advantage of this by renting vehicles only when they need them and are able to select a vehicle near their home or office. By only paying for a set time of use it can cut costs for the business and reduce parking problems.
Whether you are commuting, making deliveries or heading to a meeting out of town a Roundtrip model works well for businesses who need access to a car for a longer period, and is offered by Zipcar. You can pick up and return these cars and vans to their same dedicated bay, and book up to a year in advance. During your reservation you can park in other areas, but if you're stopping over in a space that requires a fee, you're responsible for paying it.
Free floating/ One-way
This is Zipcar’s Flex service; simply unlock the closest vehicle, and when finished, leave it within the specific ‘homezone’ (or Zipzone). Free-floating is the newest model available, and many think of it as being like a self-drive taxi. It’s ideal for everyday needs: whether you’re popping to a meeting across town, in a hurry to get somewhere, or have a last-minute pick up – you can drive and drop cheaply and conveniently.
Save time and money
Carsharing is a simpler solution for most companies, often because providers include everything you need within their service. For example, Zipcar for Business includes:
- Congestion charge
- ULEZ compliant vehicles
- 60 miles of fuel mileage included per trip
Not only does that save your business money in the long run, it also saves you and your team a lot of admin time, especially as your team grows. Rather than paying fixed monthly prices regardless of your usage, carsharing allows your business costs to scale as you grow leaving you with more money to invest in your business. With the ability to choose from different carsharing models you can find a solution that suits your business needs and empowers your employees to choose a more sustainable transport option.
Reduce your carbon footprint
CoMo’s annual report showed that for each carsharing vehicle it takes 13 personally-owned cars off the road – which helps reduce private ownership and reduce carbon emissions. Zipcar also provides over 325 electric cars within their one-way Flex fleet, the largest shared fleet in the UK. With the Congestion and ULEZ charges only growing within London, choosing more sustainable vehicles has never been more important. When you are part of a car club you will not have to worry about these mounting costs or about what type of impact your employees’ vehicle choice is having on the environment, you can be reassured that they are using up-to-date, sustainably conscious vehicles.
Future-proof your business
10% of the population is expected to adopt car sharing as their main mode of transportation by 2025. With the return of employees to the office likely to be staggered over the next few months and many opting to remotely work part of the week in the future, the need for a vehicle to commute will be reduced, leading consumers and businesses alike to rethink whether they will need a full time company car. Carsharing is the midpoint between ownership and accessibility – because sometimes you just need a car!
Make the right choice for your business
Whatever choice you make, it’s important to make the right decision for yourself and your staff’s safety. As social distancing is likely to be the ‘new normal’ until at least the end of the year, finding ways to incorporate this into your commute and daily lives is of the utmost importance. If you choose to use a service be sure to check out their cleaning updates, how they are adapting their business and what safety procedures are in place to give you peace of mind, for example you can see how Zipcar are keeping their community safe here.
