Thomas Cook has been in the headlines this week, after last-minute rescue talks failed to save the firm, which had been in business for an incredible 178 years. The company has ceased trading with immediate effect.
The news no doubt came as a surprise to travellers both in the UK and abroad, and you might be wondering what to do if you recently used Revolut to purchase Thomas Cook services. We understand how confusing and stressful this can be, but we’ve got your back.
Here’s what you need to know about getting home safe, and securing a refund where possible.
If you’re currently abroad…
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) plans to help bring you home. Their advice is to not cut your holiday short, nor head to the airport without checking your flights first. They will try to arrange flights close to your original departure date, but expect disruption and delays.
If you’re travelling after October 6th, you’ll need to make your own travel arrangements.
Hotel owners should receive compensation through ATOL, meaning travellers shouldn’t be asked to cover any owed charges.
If you booked a package trip with Thomas Cook…
The ATOL scheme protects holidaymakers in situations such as this. If both your flights and accommodation are ATOL protected, then you should be able to get a refund. You can check whether you are ATOL protected via the CAA site.
You’ll be able to start making refund claims from 30th September.
If you only booked flights…
ATOL only covers package holidays, so if you only paid for flights through Thomas Cook, you might not be eligible for a refund. The best thing to do in this case, is to try and get a refund through your insurance provider (if you have insurance). Alternatively, you can try and get a refund through your credit card provider.
If you’re not ATOL-protected, and didn’t buy travel insurance…
You might still be able to get a refund, if you used a Revolut card. This might be possible through a chargeback, which is a process where we dispute a transaction on your card.
Drop us a message via the in-app chat to get started with this process.
